Well, here we go. The independent report by Judge Louis Freeh and his team will be released to the public Thursday morning at 9 a.m. It will be long and full of information and details, and hopefully will result in some answers along the way, for better or worse. You can access the report, which will be released in PDF form, on this website.
A press conference will follow an hour after the report is revealed in Philadelphia. Nittany Lions Den will be live on the scene with coverage. Be sure to follow my updates on Twitter and follow Nittany Lions Den as well.
The Paterno family released a statement following word that the report will be released this week. In brief the family states that Joe Paterno had no involvement in any cover-up organized by Penn State officials and they remain confident that will be confirmed by the full release of the report. The family also criticized previous leaks and national coverage and alleged spin against the former coach.
I said on Twitter yesterday that the problem with properly assessing the whole Penn State situation is that too many seem to be blinded by their school pride and adoration for Joe Paterno or by pure bias against Penn State. There are many overly strong statements and plenty factually flawed logic thrown by both sides at times, to be fair. It is my hope that this Freeh report can silence some of the exaggerated bias by both sides once and for all, but I do not blame anyone for having any doubts about the complete legitimacy of the report at this point.
We'll see how this all plays out over the next 24 hours.
Success with Honor...
Penn State center Matt Stankiewitch was named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy on Tuesday. The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the top center in college football. The Big Ten has won half of the Rimington Trophies in the award's history (dating back to 2000), and Penn State's A.Q. Shipley is the lone Nittany Lion to win the award (2008). On Monday Silas Redd was named to the Maxwell Award watch list and Gerald Hodges was named on the Bednarik Award watch list.
What are the five best traditions every college football fan must do to get the full Penn State game day experience? Thanks to some help form some of you on Twitter, I came up with my five recommendations (via Bleacher Report). Feel free to add to it.
In Scores of Other Games...
In addition to the previously mentioned watch lists, the Mackey Award (best tight end) watch list was also revealed yesterday. No Penn State players appeared on this list, although the future looks bright for the position at Penn State under Bill O'Brien. Will we see a Mackey Award winner soon enough? The next list to possibly feature a Penn State player or two should be the Bronko Nagurski Award (best defensive player), which is released Thursday. The Outland Trophy watch list (best lineman) is also released tomorrow.
Earlier this week it was reported that Temple will add the NCAA's active leader in rushing and former Boston College running back Montel Harris. Harris was dismissed from Boston College following repeated violations of team rules but if he can straighten up his act he will be a very welcome addition to a team that loses Bernard Pierce. Harris joins former Nittany Lion quarterback Kevin Newsome on Temple's transfer list this season (Newsome will not be official until he completes current course work but is expected to be n the roster this fall).
Michigan walk on players made a music video.
Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini is not a fan of the four-team playoff.
Ohio State dismissed linebacker Storm Klein last week but now his attorney says his client may be exonerated and reinstated by Urban Meyer.
The National League blasted the American League in the All-Star Game, winning 8-0. While the San Francisco Giants players dominated the night, our Keystoners did well as well for the most part. Andrew McCutchen was 1-for-2, Carlos Ruiz managed R.A. Dickey as well as expected, Cole Hamels pitched a 1-2-3 inning and Jonathan Papelbon recorded the last out after Joel Hanrahan's adrenaline rush resulted in some erratic pitches.
Are you playing NCAA Football 13? Have you noticed that here just isn't something right about the way Northwestern quarterback Kain Colterlooks? Well, he did.
